A family connects around the table and a sizzling centerpiece of
perfectly-grilled steaks. Friends pop the cork, share a laugh and toast
togetherness on a warm summer night. The kids leave the catering to one
experienced team while they celebrate their parents 50th wedding
There’s just something about being trusted with so many wonderful
occasions, about having deep roots in a community. We’ve been helping to
feed Omaha since 1918 – the city’s oldest grocery store, family-owned and focused on exceptional service since day one.
We’re proud of that – and of our vibrant history, a story that dates back to World War I.
Albert Wohlner opens our original location at 33rd and
California St., and the small store quickly gains a reputation as "the
finest meat market in Omaha." 16 years later, Wohlner's makes its first
move, relocating to 5305 Leavenworth St.
After Albert retires, his son-in-law, Sidney
Schwartz, continues the family tradition of service for 25 years. His
son, Michael Schwartz, buys the neighborhood grocery store in 1987 and,
five years later, doubles the size of the store to 4,500 sq. ft.
After 74 years on Leavenworth Street, Wohlner's
Neighborhood Grocery and Deli moves to Aksarben Village. Two years
later, Mike opens a second store at Midtown Crossing, bringing Wohlner’s
back to its original neighborhood on 33rd St.
Mike sells the Aksarben location to concentrate on his thriving store in Midtown Crossing.
Our location may have changed with the times – but our core values haven’t.
From our excellent meat cutters to our personable cashiers, you can
count on unmatched, five-star service. Quality and variety also come
standard. We offer a full selection of affordably-priced groceries; the
freshest produce; and unique, hard-to-come-by products – from rich,
sophisticated wines and deliciously home-made artisan bread to Wohlner’s
private label coffee, entrees, salads and salsas.
Thank you for all the support over the years. It is a true pleasure serving you.
