Jazz on the Green Food Suggestions
Fruit:  Fresh Bing Cherries and Red and Green Grapes are good choices for a fruit snacks at Jazz on the Green.  Remember, man cannot live by wine, crackers and cheese alone.  Besides, then you won’t feel guilty when you have our Jazz on the Green Dessert of the Week—Red Wine Brownies, recipe below

Cheese:  Roquefort Cheese at room temperature is creamy enough by itself to spread on crusty Wohlner’s Sourdough Bread.  Or, here is a Roquefort Spread ideal for Jazz on the Green, a backyard BBQ, or any cocktail party year around.  I think this would be good with a chilled French Chenin Blanc or Roussane, but I’ll probably enjoy it with a nice red.

Roquefort Spread
1 package (8 ozs.) cream cheese, softened
1/2 cup crumbled Roquefort cheese
2 green onions, very thinly sliced
pinch of cayenne or shake of Tabasco
Chopped pecans –optional
Mix well with a mixer or in a small food processor. 
Serve with Ritz or Water Crackers, or crusty sliced Wohlner’s Sourdough Bread.  (btw, other uses for this spread:  On a cold roast beef or steak sandwich.  Or stuff into chicken breast and baked.) 

Salad: Bacon and Blue Potato Salad:  Blue Cheese, White Potatoes, Onion, Celery in a sour cream based dressing, made by Chef Trey and on sale this week in Wohlner’s Deli

Jazz on the Green Dessert of the Week
Red Wine Chocolate Brownies
Besides good music, Jazz on the Green is known as a place to share good wine and a nice dessert bar with friends.  Why not combine the wine and the brownie bars into one thing.  These will be the hit of the event, and everyone will ask you for the recipe.  Simple and easy with Pillsbury Fudge Brownie Mix and Santa Ema Merlot, or a Merlot or Syrah of your choice.

Red Wine Brownie Recipe for Jazz on the Green
1 pkg, Pillsbury Chocolate Fudge Brownie Mix
Santa Ema Merlot wine instead of water in package directions
Eggs, as directed
Vegetable Oil, as directed
 Using the directions on the back of the box make brownies as directed for chewy brownies; simple substitute wine for water in the amount directed.  Bake and cool.  
Red Wine Chocolate Icing for Brownies
(This icing is optional, and I hesitated posting it because summer temperatures my make it messy to eat, but still good.)
3 ½ tablespoons unsalted butter
1 oz unsweetened chocolate
4 1/2 tablespoons granulated sugar
3 tablespoons merlot (Santa Ema Merlot, or a syrah if you prefer.)
Melt butter over medium heat. Reduce heat to low and add chocolate, sugar and wine. Continue heating over low, stirring often, until mixture is smooth – don’t let it boil. Pour hot wine mixture over fresh-out-of-the-oven brownie/cake base and let stand for an hour or so. The topping should sink down into the cake and settle on top. Let sit until topping has set. I put mine in the refrigerator to speed up the chocolate-setting. This worked well for the topping, but I think the refrigerator adds to much stiffness to the base so if you chill these, let them come back to room temp before serving.

Outdoor Market at Midtown Crossing, Saturday  August 6th,  9am-12pm and every Saturday through September 3rd  at Turner Park. This week is featuring a “Top Chef” competition. Come and watch as some of Midtown Crossing’s Top Chefs compete as they purchase produce and products used from the Outdoor Market vendors and prepare a meal fit for a king! Winning recipes will be posted on the Midtown Crossing website!

Free Concert at Stinson Park , Saturday, August 6th , 7pm -10pm.  Music by The High Heel  Across the street from Wohlner’s Aksarben Village.  Outside food, soft drinks, beer and wine are permitted.  So put out your blanket and chairs then walk across the street and shop Wohlner’s Aksarben Village for all your concert picnic and party needs. 

Aksarben Farmers Market, Sunday August 7th, and every Sunday though September, 9am-1pm.   67th Street in front of Wohlner’s Aksarben Store.  Sunday Bruch followed by Ribeyes Sandwiches and Italian Sausage Patties cooked on our charcoal grill patio side.  Come join us.
